Electric School Bus Charging

Electric school bus charging solutions are rapidly becoming a focal point in the realm of sustainable transportation. People are embracing the need for cleaner and greener alternatives to fuel-powered vehicles, and electric school buses have emerged as a promising way to reduce emissions, promoting a healthier environment for students and communities alike. Given the benefits of going electric, over 300 U.S. school districts already have electric buses in operation, and over 900 U.S. school districts have committed to electrifying their school bus fleets.

While schools are beginning to electrify their fleets, there are still various challenges with EV infrastructure that limit EV adoption. In the U.S. at large, there is a lack of efficient and convenient electric school bus charging infrastructure. Moreover, the cost of installing the necessary EV infrastructure is high and there are lengthy wait times associated with installing permanent infrastructure. Thus, school districts and transportation authorities are in desperate need of charging solutions that ensure their vehicles can reliably operate while meeting the demanding schedules of school routes. SparkCharge’s innovative solutions can help school districts overcome these challenges and aid schools in the electrification of their fleets.

SparkCharge’s fast charging and energy-efficient solutions make charging school buses easy. We are the technology patent holder and the manufacturer of our 100% grid-free electric vehicle (EV) chargers called the Roadie system, which comes in two versions. Roadie Portable is a modular, stackable battery-powered DC fast charger system that can deliver charge with ease. We also have the Roadie V3, an ultra-fast grid-free charger capable of delivering 250 miles of range per battery. Utilizing the versatility of our Roadies, SparkCharge provides the world’s first mobile & intelligent on-demand DC Fast Charging Network. Our unique Charging-as-a-Service model serves consumer charging needs. With our mobile app and charging management software, we enable schools to charge their vehicles whenever and wherever they want.

  • School districts in need of funding for electric school buses increasingly have access to government assistance. The US Department of Energy is now widely supporting school districts by offering various electrifying incentives. The Clean School Bus Program provides $5 billion over the next 5 years to aid school districts in replacing their school bus fleets with zero- and low-emission models. Schools interested in transitioning to electric school buses should visit The Alternative Fuels Data Center for more information.

Utilities (Make-Ready Programs)

Electric utilities are the ones responsible for delivering electricity to homes and businesses country-wide and are therefore crucial in the enrollment of EV charging infrastructure. Coordination with a local utility is needed in almost all cases for the installation of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) infrastructure, and due to this, a majority of U.S. utilities have invested heavily in the rollout. Some of these utilities have “Make-Ready” programs, and others offer their types of rebates and incentives for consumers.

  • Utilities across the nation are investing in charging solutions, aiming to streamline installation of electric infrastructure in order to meet the growing demand for EV charging. States like New York and California are leading the charge in EV utility infrastructure, investing the most into their electric utilities. Primarily through rebate programs, the utilities look to reduce the cost for companies to install the necessary electric infrastructure.

EV “make-ready” programs offer faster installation and reduce up-front costs of purchasing infrastructure on your property using utility-side and customer-side incentives. Extra incentives are offered if the make-ready proposal prioritizes disadvantaged and underserved communities. Make-ready programs are only currently offered in the states of Massachusetts and New York, however, utilities across the nation offer similar programs. Contact your local utility to see if they offer incentives.

Make-ready programs offer to cover a percentage of the electric infrastructure cost for charging stations. The amount varies from 50% to 100% of the cost depending on the type of charger and location. Public, DCFC standardized plugs in disadvantaged areas, or L2 projects in multifamily units in disadvantaged communities are eligible for 100% of the cost being covered.

Our products qualify for “workplace charging” incentives. Stop-gap solution in waiting for fixed infrastructure materials. Our mobile DC fast charging solution is faster, and cheaper, to install. Metal, conduit, and transformer lead time can take up to 24 months while SparkCharges DCFC solutions can be deployed within 14-days. Faster, and cheaper to install, SparkCharge offers a unique, energy efficient solution to EV charging, enabling users to have more flexibility with charging infrastructure. Ultimately, lowering the barrier for entry for entities looking to meet the Department of Energy’s mission to further energy solutions through innovative technology.

PROTECT Programs

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act established the PROTECT program intending to support evacuation and resilience across the nation. Each state is given funding through this program, aiming to improve its transportation infrastructure in the case of an evacuation or disaster. The goal is to provide funding for the planning and resilience work on highways, public transportation facilities, transit services, passenger rail routes, and ports. There is $848 million available for FY23, split up between 4 different groups. Those groups are community resilience and evacuation, resilience improvements, at-risk coastal infrastructure, and planning grants.

    • The minimum possible award size is $100,000

    • There is general eligibility for projects involving transit, port, and highway projects that support resilience planning and strengthening

    • States must use 2% of their Protect Formula Program funding each fiscal year on resilience-related planning activities

    • SparkCharge’s Roadie is already being used by AAA across the U.S. for emergencies, and similarly, FDOT’s Road Runner fleet in Florida is using the Roadie to help charge abandoned EVs in extreme weather situations.

    • SparkCharge products fall under “resilience and evacuation equipment”.

    • SparkCharge can work with other applicants to support the growing number of EVs for evacuation situations.

    • Community Resilience and Evacuation Route Grants: maximum possible $45 million available, designed to support and protect evacuation routes.

Municipal Fleet Electrification

The U.S. is investing heavily in the development and deployment of EVs and EV infrastructure around municipalities and county fleets throughout the country. SparkCharge is a proven use-case in aiding the electrification of both ports and fleets nationwide.

State Incentives/County

Similar to those of Electric Utilities, certain states offer their rebates and incentives for EVSE as well. These may differ depending on county and location, but the vast majority of U.S. states contain their programs.
